I mean you can only do so much working from a weak template. I think the movie deals with identity in a very interesting way, which is in general a theme that really speaks to me, so I'm willing to look past its flaws. I am very sympathetic to your points though, and found myself nodding in agreement (especially regarding the stuff with his son). Now that I look back on it, it was my first Cronenberg! And he's remained a favorite ever since.

I also love the way Cronenberg handles violence, both in these two films and in general, but these two films especially because they're more "realistic". The straightforward, unflinching manner he films it in makes it all the more chilling.

I have much love for Eastern Promsies. I remember watching it and thinking I'd seen a modern classic and being a bit surprised by the middling reaction to it. This feeling was amplified with A Dangerous Method, which I think is one of the great contemporary films. Looking forward to reading your thoughts on it.Ryan Kellynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2856547151523423474.post-31815792534282344812014-08-24T14:50:26.566-04:002014-08-24T14:50:26.566-04:00Hurt and Harris were both fun to watch, making som...Hurt and Harris were both fun to watch, making something memorable out of a pair of pretty slight roles, but otherwise I largely agree, the movie as a whole didn't really add up to much of anything.

Some nice gore, though, at least.Johnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05364322006357208797noreply@blogger.com
