When I went on a Denis Johnson tear earlier this year, I stuck to his short to very short novels (of which there are several), so I still have his long books -- that one and TREE OF SMOKE -- pending. Know that one?<br /><br />The Painted Bird is a tremendous horror story, literally and otherwise. And I recall JOE being talked about a lot, and Brown's books in general, when I worked at a popular independent bookstore in Raleigh in the mid '90s.
